Junior Chef School Returns!
The Athens Farmers Market will host its Junior Chef School series again this summer, with cooking classes for children ages 7-13. The program offers junior chefs from beginner to advanced the opportunity to cultivate culinary skills while using fresh, local ingredients purchased directly from vendors at the farmers market.
The beginners class will teach basic cooking skills, the intermediate will improve students’ foundational knowledge of food preparation and the advanced course will challenge skilled participants with more experience. Each class includes a market shopping trip, hands-on experience and a freshly prepared meal. This year’s series will be held on three consecutive Wednesdays, with a different guest chef for each session. The beginners class, led by Christine Hughes of the Village Bakery, will be held July 21; Michelle Wasserman from Casa Nueva will lead the intermediate class on Wednesday, July 28; and Chris Daw, head chef at the Fur Peace Ranch, will teach the advanced course on August 4.
All classes will be held from 10 am to 12 pm, with participants meeting at the Farmers Market Café at the Athens Farmers Market, located in the parking lot of the Market on State (formerly the University Mall), 1000 East State Street in Athens. Younger children will need accompanied by an adult.
Cost for the Junior Chef School is $20 per session, or $50 for the series. Advanced payment is required to reserve a spot in the Junior Chef School. Class size is limited to 15 so early registration is recommended. Registration forms can be picked up and completed during regular market hours.
